Got SPF?

I found over the years that many women (and men) believe that due to our melanin, we do not need to use sunscreen. Yes of course it is a known fact that the melanin pigment in our skin is a natural deterrent to UV rays, as explained very well in the Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016; 17(12): 5257–5264.

It is vital that we too, take care of our skin during the warmer seasons, when the sun is at its highest and we are all absorbing the sweet vitamin D goodness. I will be posting several facial moisturizers that have protective qualities in them, several of them I have tried and a couple I currently still use.

Finding a protective sunscreen of your liking to use on your entire body is relatively easy, however using the same product on your face on a day to day basis and possibly under makeup is another story. Hence why finding a great quality UV protective facial moisturizer is extremely beneficial.

Also, if you are one of those folks that believe if there’s no sun in sight, that means there is no need to wear SPF, then give yourself a hard firm slap across your face right now. UV rays are UV rays even if you cannot see the sun perched high in the sky, they are very much there and your skin needs protection from them.

I encourage you to incorporate an SPF into your skincare routine if you do not have one already, and do not fret I have done the hard work for you. Unlike other races, black skin has to narrow down its SPF search because that dreaded white cast shows up on our skin the most. This blog will be highlighting several SPF that you can work with, ranging from different prices and textures which should easily be accessible for all.

Anything below SPF30 is a waste of your time, efforts, good gold coins and risk to your skin care health. With that said, let’s start off with a few personal favorites. Let’s get into it!

1. bareMinerals Skinlongevity Vital Power Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30

This product is light, fragrance free, and feels like silk. My skin intently drinks up this product and leaves my skin looking vibrant and refreshed.

2. Carol's Daughter Monoi Body Oil Spray Sunscreen SPF 30

Has a light pleasant smell. It isn't greasy so my skin doesnt look like a shiny penny. Leaves my skin feeling really soft with this amazing glow. I was impressed with how easily it absorbed!

3. DERMA E Sun Defense Mineral Oil-Free Face Sunscreen SPF 30

This sunscreen does the job. I put this on my children's faces before we go outside. I do suggest that you only use a dime sized drop of this because it leaves a sublte white sheen.

4. Derma E Sun Defense Mineral Body Sunscreen SPF 30

Again, a little goes a long way. It will leave a white sheen if you use too much. The first time I put this on my son, he looked super ashy. That was my fault. I used too much. You have to remember that it is not lotion.

5. Moroccanoil Sun Lotion SPF 50

It hydrates, its water resistant, safe for the entire family and it smells like I am on a never ending holiday. Nuff said!

6. Volition Beauty Prismatic Luminizing Shield SPF 50

I don't know if there is any other word better than Luminizing. I have never used a face sunscreen that made me look like the sun was gleaming from the inside. I literally felt like a unicorn. Although it is not for the body (the bottle is small but the product can last upwards of 5 months) I will put on my shoulders when I wear sleeveless shirts so I can do a little shimmy.
