5 Tips For Taking Charge of Your Emotional Health

Maintaining emotional health is key to having a balanced and healthy lifestyle. When most people think of health, they first think of physical health. What they often don ’t realize is emotional health has a tremendous impact on physical health. Emotional health left unchecked can eventually manifest itself in physical ailments. Being able to manage your emotions and have healthy relationships with others is vital to your emotional health. Here are my 5 tips that can help you achieve emotional balance in your daily life.



1. Identifying Your Emotional Triggers

Sometimes it’s difficult to understand what causes negative emotions to take over. It might feel like emotions or moods come and go with no warning. Taking time to become aware of certain thoughts or triggers that cause these negative emotions will allow you to understand and manage your emotional health. It is crucial to understand why you react to situations the way you do. Are there things that have happened in the past that have caused you pain that would trigger you to react out of character? Stop and take a deep breath and if possible, take some time alone to journal and meditate or pray and see what comes up. Things revealed are things that need to be healed.



2. Remain Grateful

Starting your day with an attitude of gratitude will help get you off on the right foot. Making a list of the things you are grateful for, even if it is as simple as waking up and having another day will help ward off negative emotions. While we all get in a bad mood sometimes, constantly maintaining a negative attitude will only eat away at your internal happiness. Limiting the amount of negative thoughts and speech you use every day will also be helpful. If you need help with this, try keeping a journal or asking a friend or family member to point out when you are being overly negative.



3. Seek Help

If you are suffering from emotional distress, it’ s okay to ask for help. Talking to someone you trust can be enough to ease the negative emotions brought on by a bad day. If more help is needed, seeking the advice of a mental health professional doesn ’t mean you are weak, it means you are strong enough to take care of your mental and emotional health.



4. Set and Keep Boundaries

Establishing boundaries with people in your life will contribute to your mental and emotional well-being. While being available for others is important, there will be times when they take advantage and it’s up to you to tell them what is and isn’t acceptable for you. Advocating for yourself and your emotional needs will keep you from feeling overwhelmed by other people’s expectations and behaviors.



5. Give Yourself a Break

Sometimes we are way too hard on ourselves. We set high expectations and create unnecessary levels of stress which will affect our emotional health. Remember that nobody is perfect and we need to be nice to ourselves and take some time for selfcare. Even if it’s just taking a bath or reading a book take some time to do things that make you happy and relaxed.
